Littleton, New Hampshire, in 1883 was a river town on the Ammonoosuc in Grafton County, and its economy rested on trade, small manufacturing, and the railroad that had reached it in the late 1840s. Freight and passengers moved through its depot, and goods for the surrounding farms and villages were shipped and received there. The town was also becoming a gateway to the White Mountains, where summer visitors arriving by train could reach hotels and mountain paths, so the local merchants and innkeepers depended on both the seasonal traffic and the steady business of the farm country. Residents of the period would have known Littleton as a working community that was slowly turning toward tourism, with its civic life centered on the village streets, churches, and commercial blocks that a map of this kind records building by building.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Littleton, New Hampshire, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
