Lake Village, New Hampshire, sat on the Winnipesaukee River near the lake of the same name, and in 1883 its economy rested on the water power that drove its mills. Cotton and other textile work, along with the manufacturing that grew up around the river's falls, supported a working population that lived in closely built streets close to the factories. Railroad lines running through the Lakes Region brought freight and passengers, and by the early 1880s summer visitors were arriving in growing numbers to fish, boat, and stay at hotels along the shore. Residents would have known the village first as a mill town, with the lake and its summer trade shaping daily life around the factory schedule. Little of the village's civic life in that year is recorded in detail here, so this account stays with the broader industrial and tourist patterns of the region during the 1880s.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Lake Village, New Hampshire, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
