Meredith Village, New Hampshire, in 1889 sat on the northern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee, where the town's farms, sawmills, and small shops served a population that was largely rural. By the late 1880s, summer visitors were becoming an important part of local life, arriving by steamboat on the lake and by rail to the nearby lakeshore stations, and they brought new business to boarding houses and hotels. Residents of the lake towns in this period often measured their prosperity by the health of farming and timber, but they also watched the seasonal trade grow each summer. The bird's-eye view shows the village laid out along the water, with its church steeples, houses, and roads, as a community that expected both its neighbors and its summer guests to see it as a quiet, well-kept place.
