Henniker, New Hampshire, sat along the Contoocook River in Merrimack County in 1889, a town whose fortunes rested on water power and the railroad that followed the valley. Mills on the river turned out goods and gave work to families from the village and surrounding farms, while the hill farms around town were slowly losing young people to growing cities and to the mill towns farther down the valley. Churches, a town hall, and the stores along the main street formed the center of civic and social life, where residents met for town meetings, lectures, and holiday gatherings. Local people would have known Henniker as a quiet river community of mills, farms, and white-steepled churches, and the detailed street-by-street record drawn that year shows how closely the built town still followed the course of the river.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Henniker, New Hampshire, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
