Hinsdale, New Hampshire, in 1886 was a small town in Cheshire County, set on the Connecticut River across from Brattleboro, Vermont, with the Ashuelot River running through it toward the larger valley. Like many towns in the upper Connecticut Valley, it had long depended on farming and on water-powered mills along the river and its tributaries, and by the 1880s the mill trade was tied more closely to the rail lines that carried goods and workers up and down the valley. Farm families in the surrounding hills were feeling pressure from cheaper produce arriving from the Midwest, so many young people were leaving for factory towns and cities. For the residents who lived through it, the town was known for its river, its mills, and its close-knit village life centered on the church, the store, and the town hall.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Hinsdale, New Hampshire, drawn in 1886. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
