Few images in Custer's *My Life on the Plains* are as grim as this one, which shows the killing of Lieutenant Lyman Kidder, a young cavalry officer who was attacked by Sioux warriors in the summer of 1867 while carrying dispatches across the Plains. Alfred R. Waud, a prolific illustrator for *Harper's Weekly*, drew the scene, and J.P. Davis turned his drawing into an engraving for the 1874 book. The record's caption tracings give the year as 1868, a date the catalog itself marks as unverified, but the incident belongs to the 1867 fighting along the Platte.
