Frances Cleveland sat for this group portrait alongside the wives of her husband's cabinet members, made in Frances Benjamin Johnston's Washington studio at 1332 V Street NW in early January 1897. The sitting came only weeks before Grover Cleveland's second term ended on March 4, closing a White House household that had drawn wide public interest. Johnston, one of the capital's best-known women photographers, specialized in polished society and official portraits, so the picture shows how the administration's inner circle chose to present itself at the end of the 1890s.
