The Capitol's dome rises behind a crowd of children on the lawn, a reminder that the grounds were once a common gathering place for families on spring holidays. Easter egg rolling and similar games drew children to the Capitol grounds in the decades after the Civil War, before the custom became associated mainly with the White House. The cast-iron dome, finished in the 1860s, gives the scene its unmistakable setting. In black and white, the picture keeps the focus on the children's play and the formal architecture behind them.
