The record gives little beyond a title, a medium and a date range that the cataloguer marked with a question mark, so this engraving of the Resurrection has to be read through its subject and its period. Engravings of the Resurrection in the early eighteenth century usually showed Christ rising from the tomb, often with the soldiers guarding it scattered or dazed, and prints like this one were widely sold and copied across Europe, where they served both private devotion and the decoration of churches and homes. Engraving was the main way religious images circulated in that era, so the line work and the stark contrast of light and shadow typically carry the emotional weight of the scene. Because the date is uncertain, it is worth looking closely at the plate itself for signs of the maker's style.
