Adams Sherman Hill is the subject of this portrait, a photographic print held in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Hill (1833–1916) was a Harvard professor of rhetoric who also served as Assistant Secretary of State under President Garfield and later in the Cleveland administration. The caption card does not record a date, so the sitting is best placed by the subject's career, and his later years as a scholar and writer on rhetoric and English usage are a useful lens for reading his face and bearing.
