The sitter is identified only as Annie Irish, a name taken from a caption card that the record itself marks as unverified, so the portrait is the main source of information about her. The print comes from the Otto Sarony Co. studio in New York, a firm known in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for polished studio portraits of stage performers and other prominent sitters. The copyright line noted on the print reflects the studio's practice of protecting its images, and portraits like this one, made around 1904, were widely bought and kept as keepsakes.
