Evangeline Booth, the Salvation Army leader who went by "the Army's General" in the press, is the figure at the center of this 1919 poster, which promoted her talk at the City Auditorium under the banner "The Secret of the Salvation Army's Success." Booth ran the Army's American operations and became one of the most recognized women in the country during the First World War, when Salvation Army workers served doughnuts and comfort to troops in France. Posters like this one were a common way to draw crowds to wartime fundraising and public appearances, and its bright color work reflects the commercial printing of the period.
