A Church Army hut day on Wednesday, April 18, 1917, is the appeal this poster promotes, asking the public to buy a flag, give a donation, or offer service toward recreation huts "on all fronts." The Church Army, founded in 1882 by Prebendary Wilson Carlile, ran huts and canteens where soldiers could rest, write letters, and get a meal away from the front line. Artist Ernest Hasseldine personified the cause as Britannia, and the stated goal of £100,000 shows how heavily such wartime welfare work depended on civilian donations.
