In 1934 the Bonneville Dam site on the Columbia River, about 40 miles east of Portland, was an active federal construction zone. Work began in 1933 with Public Works Administration funds, and the dam was meant to tame the Bonneville rapids, generate electricity for the region, and give river traffic a dependable route past the falls. Unemployed men from Portland and nearby gorge towns found wage work here during the Depression, while fishing families who had long depended on the river worried about what the dam would mean for salmon. This view of the power house and lock area shows the site while concrete was still being poured.
