Coulee Dam, Washington, in 1935 was a construction town on the Columbia River, where the federal government was building Grand Coulee Dam. Work on the concrete structure had begun in 1933 as a Depression-era public works project, drawing laborers, engineers, and their families to a stretch of dry basalt country in Grant County that had held few residents before. Mason City, the community that grew up near the dam site to house the workforce, existed to serve that project. Residents knew the work as a bold bet on irrigating the arid Columbia Basin and producing hydroelectric power, goals that remained years away. The dam would not be completed until 1942.
