Scratched into the back of this half plate is the name "Downing of Newburg," which identifies the sitter as Andrew Jackson Downing, the horticulturist and writer who settled in Newburgh, New York. The plate is badly obscured, so the features are hard to make out, but it came from Mathew Brady's studio in the early 1850s, when Downing was shaping American taste in gardens and rural design. His 1841 *Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening* and his magazine *The Horticulturist* influenced many estates and public grounds of the period, and he died in a steamboat fire on the Hudson River in 1852.
