Max Carey, the Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder, is shown stealing second base in the sixth inning of a game dated October 11, 1925. That date appears to fall during the 1925 World Series between Pittsburgh and the Washington Senators, and the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio, covered many of the era's major sporting events. Carey was one of the most prolific base stealers of his time, so the picture captures the kind of play that made him well known. The glass negative shows streaks and surface blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coatings.
