The record identifies the sitter only as J.C. Whittier, a name the Bain News Service recorded from its own caption cards, and the Library of Congress notes that this attribution is unverified. The glass plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work from a New York news photography agency that George Grantham Bain founded around 1899. The agency supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures, events and street scenes for much of the early twentieth century. Negatives like this one were made quickly for daily reproduction, so their subjects and dates often survive only in brief handwritten notes, which makes the collection a useful starting point for research.
