This glass negative shows a lake ship sheathed in ice, its hull, rigging and deck crusted with frozen spray, which sets it apart from open-water views of vessels. Ice like this was a regular hazard on the Great Lakes, where freighters kept hauling ore, coal and grain for as long as the season allowed. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose glass negatives recorded news and everyday life in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the scene is best read as a view of winter work on the lakes.
