A portrait of Miss Martha Travella Speakman survives on this glass negative, though the name comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The studio, based in Washington, D.C., worked from the early 1900s into the 1930s, photographing residents, officials and public events, and its plates were given to the Library of Congress in 1947. The date of about 1923 is inferred from negatives in the same range rather than from the sitter herself. Visitors should also note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which result from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
