Its caption, "Give 'er the gun," is an invitation to throttle up and go, and the poster pairs that spirit with the promise of "Learn-Earn," a pitch that a young man could train for a skilled job in the Army's flying branch while being paid. The lithograph dates to 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, when the military was scrambling to recruit mechanics and pilots for a service that had been small before the war. Its printer, W.Z. Forbes of Boston, was one of many commercial firms that turned out color recruiting posters for the government during the conflict.
