The airship is the joke at the center of this piece. *The Air Ship* was a musical farce, and its title promised a vessel that could sail through the sky, which the poster plays up with an eye-catching design. Theatrical posters like this were printed in quantity and pasted on walls and fences ahead of a touring production. Audiences of the late 1800s were fascinated by balloons and by the unsolved problem of steering through the air, so a comic stage show about an airship tapped into a real public enthusiasm. The bold color and crowded lettering typical of the period show how quickly the dream of flight became popular entertainment.
