This poster advertises a balloon ascension and parachute descent by "Prof. A.T. Glasgow," a showman whose name, like many of his peers', was built to draw crowds at fairgrounds and exhibitions. Parachute drops from hot-air and gas balloons were a popular spectacle in the United States in the late 1800s, when aeronauts sold tickets to watch a rising balloon, then a jumper dropping beneath a silk canopy. The stunts were dangerous, and the posters mixed scientific-sounding titles with bold type to promise thrills. Look closely at the lettering and layout to see how promoters pitched daredevil flight to a public still getting used to the idea of people leaving the ground.
