Titled "The grand lay-out," this color lithograph shows the full sweep of a traveling show, the kind of street parade that announced a circus before the big top ever went up. Commercial lithographers turned out circus posters in large runs during the 1870s, and this one was registered for copyright under Gibson & Co., a firm associated with circus printing. Posters like this were pasted on barns, storefronts and fences, so their bold color and crowded scenes had to sell the show at a glance. The parade itself was free advertising, drawing crowds into the streets to see the animals, wagons and performers.
