Women molding doll heads is the particular scene here: rows of workers shaping doll heads by hand in a factory, a task that was done largely by women in the toy trade of the early 1900s. This stereograph, dated 1908, was made to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the two side-by-side images a three-dimensional look and made the workroom feel close to the viewer. Doll production had grown into a sizable American industry by then, and factories often divided work into repeated steps, a shift that the subject headings on this record point to. The picture is worth noticing for what it shows about women's paid labor in manufacturing at the time.
