Currier & Ives presented Molly Pitcher here as the heroine of the Battle of Monmouth, fought near Freehold, New Jersey, in June 1778. The legend holds that Mary Ludwig Hays, known as Molly Pitcher, carried water to American artillerymen in the summer heat and took over a cannon when her husband fell, though historians debate how much of the story is accurate. The print belongs to the firm's long run of patriotic lithographs, which turned Revolutionary episodes into popular scenes for American homes in the later nineteenth century. Its hand coloring adds to the romantic, heroic tone the publishers wanted.
