In this 1915 cartoon, a genie of intolerance is cast as a dangerous ally to the women's suffrage cause, a striking choice for a wood engraving that ties suffrage to the prohibition question. Published in late September 1915, it appeared while suffrage and temperance campaigns were often debated side by side, and many suffragists worried that association with prohibitionist zeal would cost them support among voters. The artist, credited only as Cesare, uses the familiar image of a jinn, a spirit that is hard to control once released, to argue that reformers' intolerance could work against the goals they claimed to share.
