Women welding a hatch at the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation in Portland is the subject of this 1943 photograph, one of many images the U.S. Maritime Commission made to document wartime production on the West Coast. Oregon Shipbuilding, located on the Willamette River, built Liberty ships during the war, and as men were drafted into the armed forces, companies like it hired women to fill skilled jobs such as welding. The picture belongs to the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information collection, which preserved a wide view of American home-front life in those years.
