This French-language version of a 1916 Canadian recruiting lithograph asks readers to remember the soldiers of St. Julien and Festubert, two 1915 engagements that cost the Canadian Expeditionary Force heavy casualties. Canadian enlistment was voluntary until conscription began in 1917, and recruiters had to work hard to reach French-speaking Quebec, so a poster in French addressed a different audience than its English counterparts. The record also credits the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation as sponsor, an unusual attribution that is worth weighing when placing the poster in its wartime context.
