The red triangle at the center of this 1917 lithograph was the emblem of the Young Men's Christian Association, and the poster asks viewers to "take the red triangle to our boys." Its text pairs the promise that the Y.M.C.A. "keeps the home ties from breaking" with the sober line "Many will give their lives," tying the appeal to the first year of American involvement in the First World War. The poster was produced by the National War Work Council of the Y.M.C.A., which ran canteens, recreation rooms, and writing facilities for servicemen in training camps and overseas. Its designer, John F. Butler, was printed by the Globe Lithographing Company of New York.
