The print depicts the failure of the South Fork Dam on the Little Conemaugh River in May 1889, when a reservoir breach sent a wall of water down the valley toward Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The flood, which followed days of heavy rain, killed more than 2,000 people, and the disaster drew national attention to the dam's neglect and to the mill town's industrial development. Chicago lithographers Kurz and Allison specialized in dramatic scenes of current events, and their prints of the catastrophe helped spread its story across the country.
