Rather than the civic landmarks that dominate many Philadelphia bird's-eye views, this 1908 panorama takes its title from the city's manufacturing: "The World's Greatest Workshop." It was produced by W. T. Littig & Co. for the Executive Committee of Founders' Week, the citywide observance of Philadelphia's founding under William Penn that autumn. In the early 1900s the city was a major center of textile, machinery, locomotive and shipbuilding industries, and the high oblique viewpoint lets viewers trace the dense streets, rail lines and waterfront along the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers. Littig was a Philadelphia firm known for detailed panoramic views of American cities.
