Calvin Coolidge, serving as president in June 1924, stands in this glass negative beside a Dr. Tyler, though the record does not preserve Tyler's full name, and part of the caption has rubbed away on the plate. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., during the 1910s and 1920s, photographing officials, visitors and public occasions for newspapers and the public, so plates like this one document the capital in the early 1920s. Viewers should also note the streaks and clouding across the glass, which come from deterioration in the original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
