The dress shown here is labeled as Julia Gardiner Tyler's inaugural gown, and the glass negative preserves its details from a collection that the National Photo Company photographed in the 1920s. Tyler married President John Tyler in 1844, when she was 30 years his junior, and she brought a fashionable, theatrical style to the White House during her short time as First Lady. Faint streaks and blemishes across the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, and they are visible in the image.
