Recruits" is a 1780 stipple engraving drawn by W. H. Bunbury, a London caricaturist known for comic scenes of military life, and published by Watson & Dickinson on New Bond Street. It belongs to the British cartoon prints that mocked the army and its methods while Britain was fighting the American colonies and needed men for its regiments. The record links the print to an event dated around 1770, but that date comes from unverified cataloguing, so it is safest to read the scene as a general comment on how soldiers were gathered. Its humor rests on the distance between the recruiting sergeant's pitch and the reality of enlistment.
