Published in the February 2, 1861, issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, this wood engraving is titled *A job for the new cabinet maker*, and the surviving record says little more about the scene it shows. Frank Leslie's was a New York weekly that filled its pages with engravings of current events, portraits and everyday life, and this piece appeared on page 176 of that issue. Wood engravers of the period cut images into blocks, often working from artists' sketches, and printed them alongside the paper's text. The engraving dates from the winter before the Civil War began in April 1861, when the weekly's pages were crowded with political news.
