This coin shows the profile of George Washington on its face, the same portrait that has appeared on the quarter since 1932, when it marked the bicentennial of his birth. Sculptor John Flanagan based the likeness on Jean-Antoine Houdon's bust of Washington, made from life in 1785. The 1993 issue came from a period when the quarter's reverse still carried the familiar eagle, before the state quarters series changed the design in 1999. Looking closely at this piece shows how a single portrait can stay in circulation for generations while the coins around it change.
