Looking east along G Street from 11th Street, this glass negative records a downtown Washington block from sometime between 1910 and 1926. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm active in the capital in the early twentieth century, made large numbers of views of city streets, buildings and monuments, many of which were sold as postcards and prints. Glass plates were fragile and often show coating damage, so the streaks and blemishes visible here are part of the object's physical history. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, preserving a record of the streetscape of its day.
