*Drilling New Recruits* places a squad of raw soldiers under training at a fort, a setting the catalog ties to the American Revolution, 1775 to 1783. The image reproduces an 1905 painting by an artist named Arthurs, and this color halftone was printed around 1910 by the Whitehead company. Such reproductions carried images of Revolutionary-era soldiers into homes and schools at a time when interest in the nation's founding was strong. The print is also a good example of the period's method, which rendered oil paint as a pattern of printed dots.
