Marion, Ohio, a city of about 20,000 people in 1923, was built on railroads and manufacturing, with steam shovel and malleable iron works among its major employers. Its best-known resident, Warren G. Harding, had edited the local *Marion Star* before entering national politics and winning the presidency in 1920. He died in San Francisco on August 2, 1923, while on a western trip, and his body was brought back by train. This photograph records the burial in Marion in August 1923, when townspeople, officials, and visitors gathered at the cemetery to see the hometown president laid to rest. For residents, the event turned a familiar local figure, a newspaperman and small-town neighbor, into a national memory almost overnight.
