Westerville, Ohio, in 1920 was a small college town, centered on Otterbein College, which the United Brethren Church had founded in 1847. The town was also home to the national headquarters of the Anti-Saloon League, and residents were known across the country for their dry politics. National Prohibition had taken effect in January under the Eighteenth Amendment, so the temperance cause that Westerville had championed for years was now federal law. William E. "Pussyfoot" Johnson, a widely known temperance lecturer and league figure, was among the people who made the town a focal point of that campaign. For those who lived there, 1920 was a year when their campus, their churches, and their role in a national reform movement all seemed to matter.
