Wahreo was photographed as a chief of the Navajo, and this stereograph is one of the Indian Series made during the 1871 Geographical Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, led by Lieutenant George M. Wheeler of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Wheeler's survey mapped much of the Southwest, and its expedition photographers recorded Native people alongside the terrain they surveyed. Because the card is a stereograph, it was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the sitter a three-dimensional presence that was popular in parlors of the 1870s.
