Taken at Wyandotte, Michigan, on December 15, 1902, this view shows the steamship Tionesta out of the water on the ways, with its hull exposed. Vessels hauled up on inclined slipways like these could be repaired, cleaned and inspected below the waterline, which was impossible while afloat. The shipyards along the Detroit River were an important part of the region's industry at the time, and this glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographs recorded American industry and town life in the early twentieth century.
