The title, "Taxis to hell - and back," was the sort of gallows humor troops used for the landing craft that carried them ashore in Normandy in June 1944. This official Coast Guard photograph captures that shuttle service. Coast Guard crews ran many of the landing craft that moved infantry from transport ships through the surf toward the beaches on D-Day and in the days that followed. The image is a useful reminder that the invasion depended as much on small, crowded boats and their crews as on the warships offshore.
