The gates in question are the wrought-iron barriers fronting the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue, photographed during the administration of Woodrow Wilson, which ran from 1913 to 1921. That span dates the print, and it places the scene at a time when the executive mansion was open to a steady flow of visitors, reporters and passersby who could stand at the fence and look up the lawn. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that produced large numbers of street views and public-building photographs in the early twentieth century, made the image, and its catalog number, 12072, marks it as one of many views the firm sold to the public.
