The caption card ties this print to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the federal workshop in Washington, D.C., that produced paper money and postage stamps, and to the women who worked there. Frances Benjamin Johnston, who made the Bureau series, was a Washington photographer known for documenting daily work and workers in the city around the turn of the century. Women held a large share of the Bureau's hand-finishing and inspection jobs, so the picture offers a record of their place in a federal printing operation. The card gives no date, so its exact year remains unverified.
