A crowd gathered for a strike meeting in Lawrence, New York, a village on the south shore of Long Island, is the scene this glass negative records. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption information written by the Bain News Service, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified. George Grantham Bain founded one of the earliest news photo services in New York, selling pictures of current events to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so images like this were made to be reproduced quickly for the press. Glass plates of this period could hold fine detail, so the faces and clothing of people in the crowd are worth a close look.
