A combine harvester anchors this 1931 poster's message, and its subject headings pair the machine with collective farms. Its title, "The fight for the Bolshevik harvesting of the crop is the fight for socialism," ties a routine grain harvest to the party's political goals. Gustav Klutsis, a Latvian-born artist working in the constructivist style, designed it for Izogiz, the Soviet state fine arts publisher. It appeared during the drive to collectivize farming under the First Five-Year Plan, when officials promoted combines as proof that mechanized, collective agriculture would feed the country.
