Canoes drift on the Delaware River in the foreground of this c1900 view, while autumn foliage crowds the banks and a Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad train runs at right. The setting is the Delaware Water Gap, where the river cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge on the Pennsylvania and New Jersey border. Detroit Publishing Co. printed the scene as a photochrom, a color process that layered several lithographic stones over a photograph to reproduce its tones. Views like this were sold to travelers and railroad patrons eager to see the region's scenery.
