Hoffman Island, in New York Harbor off Staten Island, was the site of a U.S. Maritime Service training station during the Second World War, when the Maritime Service trained young men to crew merchant ships that carried supplies overseas. This view of the mess hall shows where trainees gathered for meals, and its Thanksgiving setting suggests the holiday was marked with a special meal away from home. Wartime holiday dinners at training camps like this one were often a rare chance for young recruits to eat well and take a break from drill and classwork. Photographs of such everyday spaces are valuable because they record the routines of ordinary service life that official reports rarely describe.
